The Brief
This ring was destined to be a one off from the very start. The client, my brother, gave me complete creative freedom to design something that reflected both his personality and my own design style.
The design centred around a vivid marquise cut tsavorite garnet. Rather than following a traditional solitaire design, I wanted the gemstone to appear suspended within flowing gold forms inspired by the natural world.
The Design Challenge
The challenge was creating a contemporary setting that celebrated the unusual shape and vibrant colour of the tsavorite without overwhelming it. Every curve was designed to guide the eye towards the centre stone while keeping the setting practical for everyday wear.
Balancing delicate proportions with long term durability was essential, particularly around the claws where security and elegance needed to work together.
Developing the Design
The commission began with hand sketches before moving into CAD to refine the flowing lines around the marquise cut tsavorite.
Digital modelling allowed the proportions, claw positions and stone orientation to be adjusted before manufacture. Once cast in 18ct yellow gold, every surface was hand finished in the workshop before the tsavorite was carefully set and the ring polished to its final finish.
