Making Your Ring Fit Comfortably Again

A ring that does not fit correctly can be uncomfortable, easy to lose and more vulnerable to accidental damage.

Depending on the design, metal and amount of adjustment required, a ring can usually be made larger or smaller while maintaining its strength, appearance and original character.

Every ring is assessed individually before resizing. Tom will consider the construction of the band, the position of any stones, previous repairs and the condition of the metal before recommending the most reliable approach.

Some designs are more straightforward to resize than others. Full eternity rings, heavily patterned bands, plated jewellery and rings with fragile stones may require a different approach.

Where resizing is not practical or would compromise the ring, Tom will explain the alternatives clearly.

How the Process Works

Step 1: Send photographs

Send clear photographs of the ring, including the inside of the band and any hallmarks, along with your current and required ring size if known.

Step 2: Receive initial advice

Tom will provide an initial view of whether the ring is likely to be suitable for resizing and the expected price range.

Step 3: Arrange an appointment

Bring the ring to the Swindon workshop by appointment. The ring can be measured properly and inspected before a final quote is confirmed.

Step 4: Approve the fixed quote

No work begins until you have received and approved a fixed quote.

Step 5: Resize and refinish

The ring is resized, checked and refinished. Where appropriate, it will also receive a professional clean and polish before collection.

The final cost depends on:

The metal

How much the size needs to change

The width and thickness of the band

Whether stones or detailed patterns are present

Whether additional metal is required

The condition of the existing ring

Any previous repairs or resizing work

The minimum workshop charge is £75.

Getting the Ring Size Right

Accurate sizing matters. The width and shape of the band, finger shape, temperature and personal preference can all affect how a ring feels.

Where possible, Tom will measure both the ring and your finger before confirming the required size. Wider rings usually need to be slightly larger than narrow bands to achieve the same comfortable fit.

Avoid relying solely on home measuring tools for valuable or sentimental rings. They can provide a useful starting point, but the final size should be checked professionally.

Resizing Engagement and Stone-Set Rings

Many engagement rings and stone-set rings can be resized safely, but they require additional assessment.

Changing the size of the band can alter the tension across the setting. Stones, claws and shoulders should therefore be inspected before and after the work.

Where the setting is worn or a stone is already loose, Tom may recommend addressing this at the same time rather than resizing the ring and leaving an existing weakness untreated.

Repair Where Sensible, Rebuild Where Necessary

Most rings can be resized successfully, but not every ring should be.

If the band is extremely thin, badly worn, cracked or has already been resized several times, adding another join may not provide a reliable long-term result.

In these cases, Tom will explain whether rebuilding part of the band or remaking the ring would be more sensible. The priority is a secure and lasting result, not simply carrying out the quickest repair.
